School-Based Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS)

The Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) program is a nationally funded initiative that places settlement workers directly in elementary and secondary schools to support newcomer students and their families with settlement, integration, and access to community services.

SWIS workers act as a bridge between schools, families, and the broader settlement system. They help newcomer parents and caregivers understand the Canadian education system, support student well-being and engagement, and connect families to language training, health, housing, employment, and social services. Services are culturally responsive, linguistically appropriate, and grounded in a strengths-based, family-centred approach.
