SWIS Services

What can SWIS Workers do?
SWIS provides both school-focused and settlement-focused supports to help newcomer students and families successfully navigate education and life in Ontario.
School-Oriented Supports
SWIS Workers help families understand and engage with the school system by:
-
Providing orientation to schools, including registration support, school tours, and information sharing
-
Offering resources, referrals, and workshops on topics such as digital literacy, mental health, bullying prevention, healthy relationships, and post-secondary pathways
-
Supporting parent and student engagement by strengthening communication between families, teachers, and school staff
-
Promoting intercultural understanding and inclusive school environments
-
Coordinating wrap-around support for students with complex needs, including referrals related to housing instability, well-being, or other barriers impacting school success
-
Facilitating peer support, youth mentorship, leadership development, and social connection opportunities
Settlement-Oriented Supports
SWIS also connects families to broader settlement services and community resources by:
-
Providing settlement information, resources, and referrals tailored to family needs
-
Delivering workshops on settlement topics such as life in Canada, community services, and family well-being
-
Supporting transitions to high school and beyond through referrals to employment preparation, training programs, and community supports
-
Offering informal language learning opportunities such as conversation circles or literacy activities
-
Organizing after-school programs and group activities, including homework clubs, recreation, leadership initiatives, and seasonal programs
These supports are flexible and responsive, helping newcomer families build confidence, connection, and success both in school and in the community.
